The Sinhala Association of Queensland (SAQ) warmly invites the community to celebrate Bakmaha Ulela 2026, a vibrant and joyful celebration of the Traditional Sinhala and Tamil New Year (Avurudu). This much-anticipated annual event brings together families, friends, and the wider Sri Lankan community in Queensland to celebrate culture, tradition, and community spirit.

The festival will be held on Saturday, 18 April 2026, at the Wests Inala Football Club Grounds in Richlands, running from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM. Set in a lively outdoor environment, the event promises a full day of entertainment, cultural experiences, and traditional festivities for people of all ages.

The celebration will feature a wide range of traditional Avurudu games and competitions, bringing back beloved Sri Lankan customs such as community challenges, fun activities, and interactive games that encourage participation from both adults and children.

Attendees will also enjoy special cultural performances, showcasing Sri Lankan music, dance, and artistic traditions that highlight the rich cultural heritage of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

Food lovers will have the opportunity to experience the authentic flavours of Sri Lanka through a variety of Sri Lankan food and festival stalls, while free lunch organised by SAQ will be provided for attendees, helping create a warm and welcoming community atmosphere.

One of the major highlights of the festival will once again be the New Year Princess Contest, open to participants aged 13–25, celebrating Sri Lankan culture, elegance, and tradition.

Throughout the day, there will be many fun activities and entertainment for the whole family, ensuring that everyone can take part in the celebrations and experience the festive spirit of Avurudu.

The evening will conclude with a musical performance by Canbrio, adding energy and excitement to the festival as the community comes together to celebrate.
