Sinhala & Tamil New Year Celebration

The Sinhala Association of Queensland (SAQ) proudly hosted Bakmaha Ulela 2025, a joyful celebration of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year (Avurudu) that brought the Sri Lankan community together for a day filled with tradition, games, music, and cultural festivities.

Held on 13 April 2025 at the Wests Inala Football Club Grounds in Richlands, the event welcomed families, friends, and community members to celebrate the spirit of Avurudu in a vibrant outdoor setting. The day began at 8:30 AM and featured a wide range of traditional activities that reflected the customs and cultural heritage of Sri Lanka.

The celebration included a traditional Avurudu table in the morning, followed by free Sri Lankan lunch for attendees, creating a warm and festive atmosphere for the community to gather and enjoy authentic flavours together.

Throughout the day, participants enjoyed traditional Avurudu games, lively Sri Lankan music, and a variety of cultural performances. Popular games such as Raban playing, Kotta Pora (pillow fighting), Tug of War, and many other traditional competitions kept the crowd entertained.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the Awurudu Kumariya competition, featuring participants aged 13–25, showcasing Sri Lankan cultural elegance and tradition.

The event also included kids’ activities, community games, and a variety of Sri Lankan food and commercial stalls, offering attendees the opportunity to enjoy food, shopping, and entertainment throughout the day. Winners of the various competitions received valuable prizes and gifts, adding excitement to the festivities.

Bakmaha Ulela 2025 provided a wonderful opportunity for the Sri Lankan community in Queensland to reconnect, celebrate cultural traditions, and share the joy of Avurudu together.
