Bakmaha Ulela 2024

Celebrating the Sri Lankan New Year in Queensland

The Sinhala Association of Queensland (SAQ) proudly hosted Bakmaha Ulela 2024, a vibrant celebration of the Sri Lankan Sinhala and Tamil New Year, on Sunday, 14 April 2024 at the Mt Crosby Sportsground, Brisbane. The event brought together families, friends, and community members to celebrate one of Sri Lanka’s most cherished cultural traditions.

Beginning from 8:30 AM onwards, the day was filled with a festive atmosphere featuring traditional Avurudu games, cultural activities, music, and delicious Sri Lankan food. Community members of all ages enthusiastically participated in popular New Year games such as kana mutti bindeema (pot breaking), tug-of-war, sack races, and other traditional competitions, recreating the joyful spirit of village Avurudu celebrations back in Sri Lanka.

Bakmaha Ulela provided a wonderful opportunity for Sri Lankan Australians—especially younger generations—to experience and connect with their cultural heritage while sharing these traditions with the broader multicultural community in Queensland.

The event was made possible through the dedication and hard work of SAQ volunteers, organizers, and community supporters, whose efforts ensured a fun-filled and memorable day for everyone who attended.

The Sinhala Association of Queensland extends its sincere thanks to all participants, volunteers, and families who contributed to making Bakmaha Ulela 2024 a successful celebration of culture, community, and tradition.
